About

Our Mission at CHU

Our mission at Community Helpers Unite (CHU) is to increase food security and capacity for independence among community members in North Winnipeg through affordable and free meals, food education, mentorship, and both paid and volunteer opportunities for meaningful employment.

CHU’s mandate is to reduce social barriers while increasing food security and access to resources to better serve individuals in the North End of Winnipeg. CHU provides over 4,410 meals weekly to vulnerable citizens in the form of:

  • 600 daily meals to three non-profit organizations providing shelter and support to community members; and
  • 130+ daily meals to community walks unsheltered relatives.

CHU envisions a future for Winnipeg that is fair, inclusive, and equitable to people from all walks of life. We are committed to making food insecurity history by empowering individuals and families, and fostering circular economies and alternative solutions. Join us at CHU and be part of this transformative journey!

Values

As an Indigenous-led incorporated non-profit organization, it is our best practice to hire primarily Indigenous staff, however, we also prioritize hiring youth, and individuals with barriers to employment.

We follow the seven sacred teachings of love, courage, respect, humility, truth, wisdom, and honesty. CHU makes decisions that promote long term sustainability and steady growth within our community. We use a people-first, harm reduction model where the answer to an expressed need is always “yes”. We create solutions using our resources, the expertise of our partners, and the skills found within our community.

Goals

Our main goal is to help people become independently food secure through:

  • Provision of a safe community space
  • Access to emergency food support
  • System navigation
  • Training for industry minimum certifications
  • Cooking and grocery classes
  • Providing volunteer opportunities that provide work references to break barriers and lead to casual, part-time, or full-time employment

Our goal is to create a replicable framework for the pathway above, that along with our core structure will be used successfully in other cities and provinces experiencing similar challenges in food security.
